Travel Guidelines for Au Pairs
No Comment |Posted by: klonergan on February 24, 2010
This information is for first year au pairs only!!
If you are an extension au pair and are thinking of traveling outside the US, call me so I can review the second year travel restrictions with you.
- You must always check if you need a tourist visa for any country you are visiting. The visa regulations are different for all countries and all nationalities, so it is important that you check with each country you are going to visit to see if you need a tourist visa. For example, many au pairs need visas to go to Canada and Mexico.
- Travel to Canada: please follow this link to find out if you need a tourist visa: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp.
- Travel to Mexico: please follow this link to find out if you need a tourist visa: National Institute of Immigration Mexico
- For all other countries, please visit www.embassyworld.com for a listing of embassies for all countries. If you travel without the appropriate documents, such as a tourist visa, you may be prohibited from boarding the plane and/or denied entry into the country.
- You must check the expiration date on your J-1 visa, located in your passport. The dates on the visa do not always correspond to the dates of your au pair program. Your travel outside the USA is restricted by the dates on your visa.
- Cultural Care does not recommend traveling outside the US during the last two months before your visa expiration date, as you run a higher risk of being denied re-entry into the US after your trip.
- Send your DS-2019 form (Certificate of Eligibility), along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to:
Cultural Care Au Pair,
Attn. Travel Validation, EF Center
One Education Street
Cambridge, MA 02141
Allow 3 weeks for your form to be returned.
Please note that any au pair traveling outside of the US without a signed DS-2019 form runs this risk of being denied re-entry into the country.
If you have specific questions about travel plans or documents, call Cultural Care’s Operations Department at 800-448 5753.

Au pairs: It is time to be thinking about the classes you want to take this Spring!
There are lots of fun options available. You could take Bellydancing, learn how to Kayak, or sing in a Community Choir (all at South Seattle Community College.) Or, you could learn Glassblowing, Rowing or Hip Hop dance (at Seattle Central Community College.) Take a new language, do a little cooking, discover photography … Explore your options, then get out there and have some fun!
Online registration for non-credit classes has already begun. Click on a school on the sidebar to the right ——-> under “Au Pair Education” to find non-credit classes.
Registration for credit classes begins on February 22nd. If you plan to enroll in credit classes, you first must apply to the school to become a student. Ask your host parents, or call/email me if you need help with this.
Remember that I need to see your paperwork once you have completed a class.
IMPORTANT: If you arrived last summer and are thinking of extending for a second year, contact me as soon as possible. I will give you the deadline by which you need to have your school credits completed in order to extend.

Keep Those Important Forms in a Safe Place!
No Comment |Posted by: klonergan on August 15, 2009
A reminder to au pairs: Do not carry your important forms (your passport, DS 2019, I-94, Social Security card) around with you. Replacing them is challenging and can be expensive, plus your travel can be restricted for the remainder of your year - it is not worth the risk!
Carry your Washington State Driver’s License or Washington State ID card for identification. Leave the rest of your forms in a safe place in your home.
If you do lose any of these forms during your year, here is some information on obtaining replacements:
DS-2019: If you lose this form, contact the Operations department at Cultural Care Au Pair (800-448-5753) and a new form will be printed and mailed to you.
I-94: You can obtain a replacement by filing form I-102, which is available on the US Customs and Immigration Website (www.uscis.gov), under Immigration Forms. The fee to replace the I-94 is $320. (!!!)
Social Security Card: Fill out a new application (available from www.ssa.gov) and bring it to your nearest Social Security office along with your I-94 and DS-2019.
Passport: The first step to replace a passport is to contact the embassy for your home country and apply for a replacement passport. To find the nearest embassy, check the following website: www.embassyworld.com Fees will vary depending on the country. Remember that if the passport is lost, your J-1 visa is also lost, as is your I-94 form. The J-1 visa cannot be replaced in the US; you would have to travel to your home country and replace it at the US embassy there. Travel outside of the US and re-entry is prohibited if the passport and its contents are lost and no replacements have been obtained. If you do lose your passport, you should contact the Operations department immediately for further details and instructions (800-448-5753).
So, Remember: Keep those documents safe!
